How can I contribute to the FAQs?

It has never been so easy!

  1. Create a login first by clicking on the Join button in the upper right corner on any of the OOoAuthors.org pages. Note that you will need to accept the PDL License on this join_form page, which basically means that you agree that your contributions can be published and modified if necessary, and can be used to help users on the various mailing lists.
  2. Now you are able to add comments to each of the existing FAQ items. This allows you to tell us and everyone who visits the page about other solutions to the problem or about other additional information which you find useful.
  3. You can also edit the FAQs. If you want guidance, assistance, or a little bit of human interaction, you can drop us a line at authors@user-faq.openoffice.org. Make sure that you have subscribed to the list first.
    1. You can start working through FAQ entries in the New FAQ Items folder. You will find them on the OOoAuthors.org web site at FAQ > New Faq Items > Contents. Most of the entries in this location have been copied from messages posted on the users mailing list. They need to be rewritten, then moved to the FAQ folder that seems most appropriate. You may also gather new FAQ items from the OpenOffice.org mail lists and copy rough drafts of new FAQ entries into this folder.
    2. You might consider translating the FAQs into your native language. Plone includes l18N support. Jeongkyu Kim pioneered this idea by providing a Korean version of the FAQs: 자주 묻는 질문 (FAQ).
    3. If you find it necessary to create a new FAQ item from scratch, go to the appropriate folder, click on the Contents tab, select Faq Entry from the drop-down list, then click on Add New Item. A new window opens, in which for ID field, use the present date followed with a letter (like "20040314a" for the first item on the 14th of March 2004). In the Title field, type the question you want to answer; for Question type in the same. Your answer to the question goes into the Answer field. Click save. That's it!
    4. As to formatting a FAQ entry: Since the present FAQ items here have been merged from three different sources, you won't find consistent formatting here. However, for the future FAQ entries please try to follow along these lines:
      1. Keep it simple. Very simple.
      2. Use only very basic html code like italics, boldface, numbered or unnumbered lists.
      3. A sequence of mouse clicks should be separated by ">". Also place the name of any list, field, checkbox, or other object of the GUI which the user will need to access between bold tags to help the steps stand out nicely.
If you find these guidelines are not enough, you are right. Please add your suggestions as comments to this page.

That's it. No CVS, no tunneling, no installing extra software whatsoever. Go ahead and try. As said above: Contributing to the community has never before been this easy.
